travel russia st petersburg gastronom

We invited our guide, Kseania, to select a restaurant and join us for lunch where we could sample a variety of Russian favorites.
She selected Gastronom, a restaurant next the park called the Field of Mars near the Moika Canal that had sidewalk seating under a tent enclosure.
The food was good, but we were a bit surprised that Russian cooking did not employ stronger seasonings... most of the food was good but very mild.
We ordered a variety of items to try and get a cross section of Russian cooking.
We had borsch, pelmini (dumplings stuffed with minced meat), a stuffed red pepper, and the favorite Russian desert, apple studdle.
Our guide, Kseania, ordered some kind of white fish.
Over-all, we were very pleased with our selections."

Our guide and her boss from Red October Tours, Gastronom, St. Petersburg, Russia, 2009.
The boss wanted to meet us to collect our tour fee in cash.
All the web sites we read said we should treat our guide to lunch and tip both her and our driver well because they got paid so little.
We learned from other sources that only the politically correct were allowed to own businesses.
